Fun Facts from my year 2016

Well … 2016 is finally over, and what a year it’s been. It’s hard to remember a year that has been so controversial, so fraught with change, so full of future uncertainty and infused with general a sense of dissatisfaction from all sides. All in all, it seems that most people, generally, are happy 2016 has come to an end, and hopefully, the start of the new year has already brought a new sense of hope and perspective, and the feeling that whatever the uncertainty we face, individually and collectively we will be rejuvenated and can start to make positive changes.

Luckily for me, my good fortune to live a life dedicated to the arts as a recording and performing artist has allowed me to survive amidst the backdrop of this tumultuous year.  I have been able to counter the negative feelings by continuously delving into my music and sharing the beauty, the peace, the distraction and the sense of wonderment that music offers.  2016 for me was a year full of music – with a great balance of new experiences and old favourites in every aspect of my life including places, pieces, ensembles and friends.

Touring with Seascapes by Eduardo Garrido, including a Mexican premiere in the presence of the composer. Click here for a live performance from Melba Hall this September.

Another great Music by the Sea Festival at Bamfield. This year I performed solo works as well as collaborations with string quartet and soprano.

Santa Pau, Catalonia, Spain
Some non-musical highlights for the year included enjoying April 2nd twice, discovering new cities in countries I love, like Santa Pau in Spain, Forbes in Australia and Los Angeles in the USA.  I saw some amazing nature -  I sailed through the Norwegian fjords and I spent the day in Hilo, Hawaii, the city with the most rainfall in the northern hemisphere (and it rained!). I dined on lobster in Norway, tacos al pastor in Mexico, fresh salmon on Vancouver Island,Moreton Bay bugs on the banks of Tin Can Bay and lechon in the Philippines.   I even got to see The Late Show with Stephen Colbert live in New York City!

Here are some fun facts from a dizzying 2016:

New Solo CD

About the Project ...

I will be heading to England at the end of January to record a new solo CD which will be released later this year, again through Cala Records. This will be my third solo CD and my fifth in total. I will again record with the wonderfully talented producer and engineer John Taylor, with whom I have recorded all my other CDs. I will be recording in the beautiful St. Andrew's Church in Toddington, a venue with a fantastically rich and full acoustic and one that I've not recorded in since 2004 when I recorded my first solo CD (and first ever CD) Stélé, as a young 22 year old.

This new CD will celebrate the most well-loved works for classical guitar. This repertoire, by composers such as Isaac Albéniz, Francisco Tárrega, Augustín Barrios, Astor Piazzolla, Heitor Villa-Lobos (amongst others), is the music I listened to as a child. It's the music I first fell in love with, and the reason I not only started learning guitar, but the reason I pursued classical guitar as a career.

Fun Facts from my year 2015

As the days get longer and 2016 slowly starts to get under way and shake off the celebrations of the holiday season, I again find myself reflecting on the year that was and on the year that will be. This year, for the first time in several, I was able to spend the New Year at home in Barcelona, enjoying the festive lights, the comparatively warm weather and the company of good friends over great food and wine.

2015 was again a year filled with travel (to 16 countries) and wonderful music making in a variety of settings. Highlights included performing Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Guitar Concerto in D major three times in Texas, performing on the 175th Anniversary Trans-Atlantic crossing on the regal and enchanting Queen Mary 2, a return to Beijing with Zoco Duo as part of the String-139 festival, listening to my solo CD Blackwattle Caprices on a Delta flight and developing and performing the beautifully rich and profound prose of Juan Ramon Jimenez's Platero and I, set to music by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, with my brother Gideon.

Fun Facts from my 2014

As 2015 begins I find myself on a beach in the Caribbean, reflecting on the year past.  2014 has really flown by and was filled with great new experience as well as some old favourites. Though no full calendar month was spent at home in Barcelona, I did manage to spend a full 18 days home more than last year.  So as not to feel too lazy, I played more concerts there.

2014 was full of great music making as well: a few world premiere performances, the release of my new Zoco Duo CD, solo concerts in Barcelona on a beautiful old guitar made by Enrique Garcia in 1913, and a fantastic tour with the Australian Guitar Duo to name just a few.

Looking ahead I'm excited with what 2015 will offer: 3 performances of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's 1st guitar concerto in Texas, a new solo CD and some concerts for guitar and narrator with my actor brother Gideon.

Below are some fun facts from my busy 2014.

Travels far and wide

It's only May but 2014 has already been a busy year with lots of great performances, travels and adventures; I have seen familiar faces and far-off places, I ate a fish that flies and a bird that doesn't, and I drank the nectar of many gods in many new and exotic lands.

Fun Facts from my 2013

As we look forward to the new year and all it may bring, I wanted to share some of my highlights from 2013. As usual I traveled a lot, sometimes by myself, sometimes with Laura and sometimes with Rupert.

I saw the world's tallest building in Dubai and the world's smallest active volcano in the Philippines. I ate Peking duck in Beijing, Pacific salmon on Vancouver Island and bagels in New York; I drank cocktails in Tahiti, Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand and absinthe from the oldest bar in Barcelona.

Here are a few more interesting facts from 2013 ...

Featuring
  • Music by the Sea at Bamfield
  • Working with Durwynne Hsieh on a new piece
  • New CD Release
  • Oregon Brewers Festival
As I enjoy the gradual change from summer to autumn in Barcelona, one of my favourite times of year here, with the days not so excruciatingly hot, the nights still balmy and some of my favourite Catalan celebrations on the horizon, I have been thinking back on my summer and I wanted share some of the highlights from my time in North America.

It was a very full two months along the west coast of Canada and the USA, traversing almost 4,000 miles stretching from San Francisco to Vancouver Island, Portland to Los Angeles, and finally east to Kansas. Filled with a healthy balance of performances at festivals, recitals, masterclasses and time with friends and family, the tour consisted of 17 concerts, two birthdays, a world premiere and an artisan beer festival.
